Are We Having Fun Yet? 6 Tips For Those Days When You Don't Want To Workout

Serious question, are you having fun when you work out? Now be honest, it's OK to say HELL TO THE NO because I would say 5 times out of 10 you aren't going to be happy about it. GASP! What? Working out isn't fun? Not always you endorphin junkie! There are two types of people in this world, people who eat sleep and breath getting sweaty and then everyone else. I am going to have to admit that I identify with everyone else. 

"BUT KELLY! Holy hypocrite! All you do is talk about how much fun running is!"

That's true, I am totally guilty of boarding the endorphin junkie train but I need to be completely honest with you, most days the absolute last thing I want to do is go run, lift weights, spin or suffer through 30 minutes on an elliptical. SO SHOOT ME!

The hardest part about running is often just getting out the door. That's a fact. Every workout isn't going to be life changing. Here are some tips for those days when you just don't want to get sweaty:

1. Put On Your Workout Clothes.

Don't want to work out? I feel ya, but put on your workout clothes. Sometimes just getting dressed is half the battle.

2. Change It Up.

This one is especially key for all you serial fitness know who you are, you are obsessed with one thing and one thing only? There's nothing wrong with being a devout runner, spinner or zumba-er but honestly if you're dragging your feet before a workout, the best thing to do is try something completely different and change it up. You won't have time to focus on the fact that you are in a terrible mood if you're trying to keep up with your new task at hand. Then boom, an hour later it's over and you may just find a new passion.

3. Set a New Goal.

It's a no brainer, if you're not excited about doing the exact same thing why wouldn't you set a new goal? Try running a faster 5k/10k or half marathon. Start spinning or try to see how you can improve at a barre class or yoga. Try the terrifying cross fit! Hell get really crazy and register for a marathon! Set a new goal and allow the excitement surrounding it re-ignite your drive. Sometimes you have to find a new way to get excited about the same old thing.

4. Smile.

That's my secret, when I'm in a really terrible mood and the last thing I want to do is sweat I force the scariest smile on my face. You know the saying, "Grin and bear it" well it actually helps. I'm not kidding after 5 minutes of holding that terrifying smile, it's impossible not to feel your attitude change. The same goes for the end of those really terrible races when your legs are burning and your brain is saying, "ENOUGH!" Just smile it out.

5. Remember Why You're Doing It.

I don't know how people work out just to work out. If there wasn't a purpose, I sure as hell wouldn't do it. That being said, I often remind myself why I run. It may be a marathon I'm training for or I may just need to remind myself, "There once was a time when you couldn't do this. Push your limits, dig deep and suck it up." Never once have I finished a workout and said, "I really regret that." Never ever. Remember, even a 30 minute run is better than no run at all.

So take a second to remember why you are getting sweaty. Maybe it's so you can have a cheeseburger for dinner and not feel guilty about it, maybe it's so you can look and feel like the best you possible or maybe it's because you had a really shitty day and you need to blow off some steam.

6. Distract Yourself.

Do you workout with music? Get a new playlist. Try a book on tape. Call someone on the phone and talk to them while you workout (*Let them talk to you. Call that one person who talks your ear off.) Honestly the whole "Hottie Hunting" selfie revolution started when I needed to distract myself from the fact that I didn't know if I was going to be able to run the NYC Half. I ended up almost running a personal best after 4 months of very limited working out. Distracting yourself is an excellent card to play when desperate times call for desperate measures.

7. Get Lost.

Here's a tip for all you runners, if you know you have to run a certain distance but just aren't in the mood, run far away from your car or house so if worse comes to worse you at least have to walk back. If I know I have to do 7 miles but I don't want to run more than 3 I run 3.5 miles away from my starting location. That forces me to run the 3.5 I don't want to run back. Sometimes brute force is your only option.

It all started when a silly joke made headlines back in 2014 when I took selfies with hot guys “hottie hunting” my way through the New York City Half Marathon. But ironically enough, I haven't always been a runner. As the self-proclaimed former President of the "I f*cking hate running club", I spent most of my life finding ways to avoid physical activity. Growing up, I missed over 70 days of PE my senior year. Working out was something I thought I had to suffer through in order to lose weight. 

Then, in 2009, my younger brother passed away unexpectedly and struggling to manage my grief, I gained more than 75 pounds. With the weight gain came a new fight to regain my sense of self and learn to love the body I saw when I looked in the mirror. Then one Thanksgiving morning, drowning in grief and self doubt, I decided to go for a run. I didn't make it half way down my street before I had to stop to walk but for some reason, struggling forward made more sense than getting back into bed. It turns out that running is a lot like grief, neither ever really get easier, you just get stronger. 

Over time, I realized that while some people are in fact born runners, others are made. I created this blog Run, Selfie, Repeat and my new podcast by the same name with the hopes to inspire others to say yes to themselves while making them laugh hysterically because laughing, in my opinion, is the solution to everything. 

Named by Women's Running as one of twenty women who are changing the sport of running and by Competitor Magazine as one of 12 Influential and inspiring runners under 30, my mission is to inspire others to get embrace a healthy lifestyle and pursue the strongest version of themselves possible.
